Dear Mum,

As you can imagine it’s been a pretty busy few weeks, even the weekend was crazy.

On Friday Deanne went out with the Mum’s from Kindy for an Xmas meal, so Joshua and I went to get some fish and chips, which we ate at the playground at Riverton. During Daycare he had actually taken part in some facepainting (for the first time ever) so I thought I better capture it for posterity, which is the first picture.

Joshua seemed more interested in playing on the playground than eating his chips and potato scallops, but eventually he did take some time out from his busy schedule to have dinner. The second picture is of him looking through the spyglass at the park, this was after we had eaten and we played together for a bit, ho didn’t get to bed until about 9 o’clock.

On Saturday I did what remained of my pre-Christmas, Christmas shopping. I’ll send the UK contingent’s stuff out in the new year. Then I met with Deanne and Josh at the shopping centre at Success, I turned up just in time to stop at Miss Maude’s for a drink and a cake, which was nice. Then we did our food shopping and came home. It was super busy at the shops, but I still have a bit of a disconnect going in my head about Christmas being three days away because it’s sunny and hot!

On Sunday we had an impromptu trip to the Zoo, most of the animals were laying about relaxing, although it wasn’t such a hot day as a few lately, we’ve been up to the high thirties a couple of times. The best picture I got was probably the third one below of the Koala having a bit of a kip.

My final, slightly exciting, news is that I’ve actually got round to publishing my book on Amazon. If you or ToF want it I’ll chuck you a copy of the finished one straight to your Kindles, but if you happen to get a chance tell Rich he can even buy it in Brazil by going to the Brazilian Amazon website and searching for Dan Ladle. The cover of the book is the fourth picture, although I’ve updated it since I did that one but it hasn’t shown up on the site yet!

Zoo Excursion

Dear Mum,

By all accounts all the kids were very well behaved on the kindy/pre-primary trip to the Zoo today. The little ‘uns went on a bus and Dee drove her car, taking a couple of the other Mums with her. Deanne got to look after Josh and one other boy. Joshy seemed to enjoy it, they even all sat for an hour in the afternoon and listened to a talk. Whether that was due to them being interested or being tired out after stomping round the Zoo for several hours I don’t know.

As for me, work was pretty good today, although I had to take a short lunch again, so I could pick up my box of infusion sets from the post office in Canning Vale. I then got a call, just before I’d finished making tea and had to help someone out who couldn’t get into the work systems on his new personal laptop. Sorted it just in time to say hello to you on the Skype and then we ate. Got Josh ready for bed, read him “how to unbounce a Tigger”, from The House at Pooh Corner, which he thought was funny, then did my ironing.

Nearly bedtime now, so I’ll sign off with a picture of Snuggles relaxing on one of the boxes we have in the sitting room at the moment while we’re sorting out the fourth bedroom.

Orang Utans

Dear Mum,
We got up a bit late this morning, around eight, had breakfast then packed snacks and lunch and set out for the zoo.
The new orang utan enclosure is pretty cool, there is a walkway up in the air, so you are much closer to our relatives than you could previously get.
We also went around everything else. Josh still seems most infatuated with the cassowaries and the meerkats (especially the babies). It’s really good being able to get in whenever you like, we’ll miss it when we can’t do it anymore and might have to get some season tickets.
We came home at one-ish and tried to get Joshua down for a sleep, but it didn’t happen. In the end we all ended up playing, with a number of his birthday presents.
The picture is not from the zoo, as I forgot to take my phone. We have some pics on the camera but haven’t got them off yet. However what you do get is a picture of the boy covered in cushions on the sofa!
He also played a fame where he was “in bed”, covered in cushions on the floor. He got me to be his alarm clock, ticking then tocking, when the alarm (me again) went he jumped up, ran to one corner of the room for breakfast, then the other side of the room to brush his teeth. It was very funny to watch.
Deanne is back at work tomorrow so it’s Joshy/Daddy day. We have to take his library books back and go to the bank to pay some money in, which is nice.

Happy Mother’s Day

Dear Mum,
I thought I better wish you a happy Mother’s Day as I failed to send you a card, what with being quite badly organised at the moment!
Neither Deanne or I slept very well last night, I got up at about one and woke her up in the process, I did a blood test and was 4.1 so I had some food and insulin then went back to bed. However I couldn’t get back to sleep. I don’t know how long I was awake for but Dee said she didn’t get back to sleep until half four.
So we had a late start this morning, I played with Joshua after feeding him breakfast at near to nine o’clock. Wd played with his planes and then built some stuff out of Lego.
This afternoon we went to the zoo and looked at some of the animals, as per the pictures below. It was good but we were all a bit tired by the time we got home.
Not sure what’s on tomorrow, some ironing and other bits and pieces.

The Long Walk

Dear Mum,

Because Julie was looking after Joshua today I decided I’d take a trip into the city, however I did a few other bits and bobs in the morning and waited until after I’d had my lunch to go so I didn’t have to fork out $20.00 for a limp sarnie from some disreputable eating establishment.

I got to the city some time around one and started walking (thankfully it wasn’t too hot a day or I’d have given myself sunstroke!). I walked, and walked, and walked…etc. etc. etc. I went up and down the three main shopping streets, which are each on the long side, then I traversed them via shopping arcades and side streets until I had been most of the way around the central shopping bits.

Then I went to the top end, St George’s Terrace I think it’s called, then I headed back to the other end and went towards the museums, then round Northbridge and China Town. Then back to the centre, stopping briefly at a newsagents which sold Vanilla Diet Coke, which I haven’t been able to get in about ten years. Hooray for the only place left on the planet that still stocks it!

Then I came home, where Joshua and Nana had been having a really productive day, needless to say the picture below is of Joshua’s improvising. It’s called simply “Zoo”.

Tomorrow is another Joshy/Nana day so I’ll probably do a bit of calling around of the recruitment people to see if anyone has found anything for me to do yet.

Love

Dan

Zoo

Dear Mum,

Today we went to the zoo! We got there at about nine o’clock and saw…just about everything. Joshua had a few “moments”, but it was understandable as it was a really long day and there were so many animals to see. I’ve attached a picture of Joshua being a koala, as you can tell.

At one point we went to see the numbat, which was hiding amongst its wood and plants. A man was telling his friend that they were camouflaged and Josh asked us what that meant, so we explained the meaning of the word to him. We looked a bit more but couldn’t see it, so we left the little shed that opens out onto the numbat enclosure. As we came out some other people were going in and Joshua turned towards them as they went through the door and at the top of his voice shouts, “it’s camouflaged” about three times, and then runs up to us and told us that the people didn’t understand! We suggested that they’d figure it out when they got in there.

He seemed incredibly interested in the cassowarys, we had to go back to their pens a couple of times for him to check them out. The other thing that seemed to impress him was when we were in the Indonesian bit of the zoo and we went into a little kind of cave-y bit with a pane of glass. Joshy said “wow, what is it” and we told him it was a Komodo dragon. He sat on the sill next to the window and stared at the thing for longer than he looked at any other animal, he was entranced. Which was funny because the large, dangerous reptile was doing nothing more exciting than laying on a log under a lamp (Deanne said it seems to do that all the time).

This afternoon we went to Bob’s house so I could have another quick look at his computer. There was nothing wrong with it as such but because he’d changed his internet plan he’s used up all his data until Monday and so they’ve throttled his connection so it takes him ages to download anything, for instance a Google search took about twenty seconds. Anyway I talked to his provider and figured out what the problem was and we organised for me to head over on Wednesday to finish getting his machine set up (hopefully!).

We’re having a (very) relaxing day tomorrow as Julie and Rick have gone on holiday for a week so we have the house to ourselves, we’ll probably watch some movies with Josh, play around the house a bit and do some washing, etc.

Love

Dan
