They Have To Mate First!

Dear Mum,

Life is barrelling along at the moment. Deanne is busily learning at University, Joshua is learning at school and I’m working. I hope you got the pictures I chucked in the dropbox the other day. Josh’s swimming lesson was fantastic, watching him walk into the water with his pyjamas on was hilarious, and he did such a good job of his life-saving exercises, paddling on a surfboard, pulling other kids out of the water and generally having a huge laugh the whole time.

He’s also preparing for his birthday party, he’s been getting out of bed a bit early and drawing and cutting out Octonauts vehicles, as he’s having an Octonauts party. He ran in the other morning to show us a bunch of them. He has also written a rather exclusive list of who he would like to come to his party, although it’s not on for another few weeks because a lot of people are on holiday over Easter.

I mainly wanted to tell you about the conversation Joshua and Deanne had when Joshua brought home the rather fine model of a Triceratops he made at school today. After getting in he got a marker pen and drew a baby Triceratops on the Mummy. Deanne said that not all female animals have babies inside them, to which Joshua, quite seriously, pointed out that “no Mummy, only after they’ve mated”!

I have, of course, included a picture of said Triceratops. If you look carefully you can see the fetus just above the cereal bowl.

New Goggles

Dear Mum,

Just wanted to say “hi”, we’re okay just incredibly busy! Thought I should tell you what’s been going on a bit…

Josh is having a great time at school, he seems to have settled in really well and is starting to recognise the other kids in his class, even if he doesn’t know any of their names yet. Although when I dropped him off at pre-school care on Friday another boy from his class was there, it was Harry, who we met at the very beginning of last year but haven’t really seen since. Joshua made an amusing face with a gum nut and Harry thought it was funny, so hopefully they might get to know each other.

He’s also loving the gymnastics and swimming lessons, he is trying to take it all quite seriously, however the way it usually turns out is with him laughing and either falling over (gymnastics) or getting a mouthful of water. But he is definitely improving, he now just splutters a bit after an immersion, rather than wiping his face for a couple of minutes and coughing.

Deanne’s job finally finishes in a week or two, she is a bit nervous but looking forward to getting back into academia. Can’t remember if we’ve actually told you about that, I’ll fill you in next time we Skype.

Personally I’ve been quite busy doing all sorts of different writing things, there is the new ‘blog I’m contributing to at http://www.semplesize.com. There is also the writing ‘blog at http://ladlewritings.wordpress.com on which I recently published a Competition to identify the Twitter accounts for the six characters from my book, the winner gets a free copy of my book.

I’ve also started writing two new books, the one I mentioned about Diabetes, and the other one about the Vampire, both are progressing nicely, although not as fast as I would hope, but that’s what happens when you have a life!

Gotta go, it’s bed time and we’re all tired after a day watching some Giants, going to a swimming lesson and generally having a lot of fun.

The picture is of Josh in his new goggles, which actually fit him!

Swimming Lesson

Dear Mum,
Josh’s first week at School went very well. He seemed to enjoy it and we weren’t made aware of any ‘incidents’. In fact he appears to have matured greatly in less than seven days.
He has been helping out around the house, getting himself ready in the morning and generally being really well behaved. Hopefully it continues.
Today we had his first swimming lesson. His teacher is named Elena and at the start of the lesson she took Joshua’s hand, along with the other kid who’d turned up on time, and off they went to swim. He had a great time and seemed pretty confident, splashing about, jumping in and throwing things. A fairly successful lesson.
Tonight there’s a party for Deanne’s cousin’s birthday, so Josh is staying over at Nana’s house. Apart from that life is pretty much as per normal, Dee just made some rock cakes and Josh is watching a film to relax after his swimming lesson.
A couple of pictures, one of the boy when we got to the pool, another of him watching the movie.

Ready for School

Dear Mum,

Just a quick one to say hello, welcome back to the UK and it was nice to Skype you yesterday. I’ll try and get back to ‘blogging over the next few weeks, although I have so much on at the moment that its hard to find the time.

To summarise, I’ve started writing another two books, one is a vampire comedy thing, another is about my life with diabetes, I’ve also started planning to collaborate on a musical with one of the girls from my writing group using my old songs and her ideas, finally I’ve also just asked to be a contributor for a music ‘blog called Semplesize, my first article is here.

I’m also currently running six extra Twitter accounts for characters from my book, so that is also taking up my valuable waking hours, plus some of my sleeping ones as I schedule their Tweets to go through the night.

Josh started pre-primary this morning, here’s a picture of him ready to go.

Snowflakes Aren’t Falling On Our Heads

Dear Mum,
I’m on call this week so keeping it short and sweet.
Joshua finishes his first year at school tomorrow, and what a year! He’s taking in some cards for his friends and might be meeting up with a few of them over the summer holidays.
That still feels weird, breaking up for the summer holidays…and Christmas!!! Barbecues all round.
He also did his last gymnastics lesson of the year today, but will be starting again in 2015, as well as being enrolled to start swimming lessons. He’s going to be super busy.
Deanne is working hard to get her business off the ground, while she’s not at work on a Monday and Tuesday, and I’m still figuring out what to do at work, as well as getting closer each day to publishing my book.
I’ve also been making some Xmas decorations as we left all ours in the UK. The one you can see below is an Ewok, from Return of the Jedi.

It Still Needs A Bit More Petrol!!!‏

Dear Mum,

Back to normal today. I dropped Josh off at school, he ran about with Liam because they were both a bit early. When the buzzer went off we headed inside and Joshua played with some building things, which made a farmyard and sheds. Some of the girls came and sat around him. I’m not sure if it’s good or bad but he seems very popular with the (little) ladies. This morning Ella asked if she could sit next to him, then when the twins arrived Summer came up to tell us that it was her birthday in nine days time, which was nice.

I came home and started downloading the papers for Rich’s project again, I also called a couple of people about a couple of jobs.

I got back to school a little before three and met one of the other school council members, she runs the uniform shop and I said I’d take a look at the spreadsheet with the sales data on to see if I could come up with some yearly trends. Haven’t fired up the pen drive yet but it should be an interesting task. Joshua also got an invite to the twins party next Wednesday, which made the episode in the morning make more sense.

When we got home I offered a trip to the park, Joshy decided he wanted to walk, rather than ride his bike, to the “medium” playground, which is about two kilometres away! He did actually walk all the way there and back, although there was a bit of moaning about tired legs as we were nearing home. However he did make me stop at the exercise machines on the way back so he could get on the stepper thing. While he was on it and pushing the pedals and handles up and down it made a squeaking noise, Joshua listened to it then said “It still needs a bit more petrol!!!‏” I assume what he meant was oil but he said it so sincerely that it made me laugh. That’s what the picture is of anyway.

Deanne was home and making dinner by the time we got back. Lasagne, very tasty. After putting Joshy to bed Deanne has been trying to check the iiNet bills, as they seem to have made some sort of mistake for our charges, but we’re not sure exactly where the problem is, and if it’s in our favour or not. I Skyped Rich and wished him a happy birthday, we had a bit of a chat about nothing much and now it’s bedtime so I better get myself sorted and have a sleep.

I might run in the morning as Julie is dropping the boy off at kindy, apart from that back to the grind.

Kindy’s Little Helper

Dear Mum,

It did feel a bit weird going to school without Joshua this morning, but once I got there and got started on the sticking and cutting it was fine.

I taped together some bits of card the kids had put their hand prints on, including Joshua’s, to make folders, I assume to put art into. Then I supervised some of them drawing bees on some Easter pictures, I had to try and make sure they put on all the right anatomy, six legs, two antennae, two wings, a stinger, stripes. Which I did with varying degrees of success! After I’d finished making the folders they gave me my dispensation and I came home.

I hung out some washing in the afternoon then headed to the shops to get Joshua a card for his birthday. When we went there last week each shop must have had about five different cards with dinosaurs on them, however because I kept forgetting to go get a card – and it’s getting a bit close to Easter – I had to scour all the shops and eventually found one at Target.

Tomorrow is the big day. Our little boy will be four. Deanne has the day off work, I think we’ll be doing a bit of shopping in the morning to prepare for the party in the afternoon. I’ve attached a picture of the stack of presents he has to open in the morning (yours is at the back right hand side!). However I suspect he’ll also be getting a few more when the relations turn up in the afternoon.

I will appraise you of the young ‘uns level of excitement and happiness tomorrow night.

Love

Dan
