Park

Dear Mum,

Just having my lunch break at work so thought I’d write a few words.

The park we went to on Sunday was really good, it had a water play area and a few playgrounds. I don’t know if you can see from the attached picture but there was also a pond which had long necked turtles in it. Joshua had a great time running into and out of the water fountains and sprays, Deanne and I sat and watched him from a safe distance. We took a packed lunch which had salad, fruit, home-made biscuits (courtesy of Deanne) sausage rolls and fruit and chocolate rolls (courtesy of me), lots of water and a couple of cans of coke.

After Josh got changed we walked around the pond and went to a couple of other play areas, then walked back to the car (with Josh starting to say “my legs are getting tired”), then went to IKEA to get some cutlery to go with the outdoor crockery we bought a while back.

The temperature got up to about 39°, but thankfully we managed to stay in the shade for most of the day.

Deanne has put her name down to help with the Zoo trip planned by Josh’s school next week. Funnily enough most of her days off lately seem to have been spent at the zoo!

The other picture is of some of the trees in the park which I thought you and ToF might like to see.

We Didn’t Go To The Zoo Today

Dear Mum,
The weather was horrible so we didn’t go with our original plan of going to the zoo. Instead we stayed at home this morning and watched Return of the Jedi, which Joshua seemed to thoroughly enjoy. He especially liked the Scout Walkers, or AT-STs, as he liked to spell out.
We had some of my home made sausage rolls for lunch. Josh and I made them when we got up this morning, as we thought we could take them with us if we went out.
By about three o’clock we were all getting a bit grouchy, the enforced day inside was sending us all a bit stir-crazy. So I suggested we go out somewhere, Deanne came up with a trip to Coogee beach and a pot of tea/Diet Coke/babychino. It was very pleasant and took the edge off our moods. As you can see Joshy enjoyed his babychino.
Tomorrow Dee is at work, I’m taking Josh to Scitech, as he is booked in to the Dinosaur Detectives workshop. I drop him off and he gets to do lots of investigations, dig up fossils and look at fake dino-poo to see what’s in it. I’ll stay nearby, then meet him after and we’ll spend some time being SciTreckers.

Snuggles Has Left The Building

Dear Mum,
Deanne was in a baking mood today, and we didn’t have anything else planned. So while Josh played in the garden and I hung out some washing, she made some chunky monkey cookies, an apple pie, an apple strudel to put in the freezer and (in the afternoon) chocolate chip cookies. We also have some leftover lemon slice from yesterday and a few other frozen bits and pieces.
Toasted sandwiches for lunch, then we went to look at a house for sale in Leeming, not that we’re planning on buying any time soon, but we want to get our heads round what’s out there.
After that we took Josh to Kings Park, but sadly we had to curtail the trip due to tiredness and grumpiness (his, not ours). After getting home he went to bed and slept for a couple of hours.
I made crushed potatoes for dinner, with some sausages and vegetables. Apple pie for pudding, Josh had ice cream we had cream, it was lovely. We still have half of it left so I suspect it’ll be on the menu tomorrow night too.
I also used the sausage mix I froze weeks ago to make some sausage rolls, which we might use for lunches, etc. A lot of cooking today!
Deanne is still not quite better from the balance problems, plus she tripped on the sofa and re-hurt her back again, so she’s hobbling around in some discomfort at the moment. I’m sure she’ll be fine but she’s had a tough couple of weeks.
I suspect I may hear back from the new boss about a starting date in the next day or two, it’ll be funny going to work again.
Snuggles finally left the building of his own accord tonight and stayed out for a good hour or two. We’re very proud.

Sci-Trekkers

Dear Mum,
After Deanne had left for work today Joshy and I read a couple of his books, then got up and played for a while before cooking some sausage rolls then packing them, along with some other food and drinks. After I showered we grabbed the bag of supplies and drove to Scitech.
It was almost eleven when we arrived so we sat down and ate some lunch, then got on with some scientific investigation and engineering. Joshua was particularly interested in the big interactive water wall today, it’s a huge screen with a cartoon scene, that you can draw lines on to direct the water. You can fill up things like water tanks and solar heating systems, then empty them out again.
He also waited ages for a turn on the pneumatic message sender. Once he got his turn he spent a couple of minutes carefully writing the note, as per the picture below, then jumping up and down on the seat which blows air through a pipe, to move the message canister to the other end where I was waiting.
We got home around three and Josh watched Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 (again!!!). Deanne had sent me a link she had happened upon about setting up your own IT support business. And it got my brain chuntering, so I decided I’d have a go. I’ve already set up a website and am going to order some business cards as soon as I get a chance. I’ll post the site up here when I’ve got it all ready for action. I figure I have skills which people need and I have nothing to lose, so I may as well have a go!
Tomorrow is, as yet, unplanned. Although Joshua has mentioned the Zoo. But I’ll wait to see what the weather is like before we decide.
By the way, I’ve dropped a few more photos of today in the Dropbox, so get the Old Guy to download them for you.

New Job…Sort Of

Dear Mum,

I dropped Josh off at school this morning and spent a bit of time playing with him and a few of his friends with the Play-Doh. They all started off cutting letters out, then Joshua and Ryder both rolled some snakes out, before it was time to pack up and I left.

I went to the library to drop off a couple of books, including the enormous dinosaur one Josh and I read to the end before I took him in, as per the picture. I popped to the shop and bought a few things as we needed some milk and Deanne wanted to do some baking tonight.

After I got home I started doing some of Richard’s work. It took me a bit to get my head round what I was meant to be doing but then I got into the swing of things and managed to get a rhythm going. I worked until lunchtime then took a break, heated up the last of my sausage rolls and watched an episode of Futurama while I ate.

Got back to the academia after finishing, then worked until it was time to pick the boy up.

I packed a little box with some dried apricots, sultanas and nutri grain (wheaty cereal that goes nicely with the fruit) along with a drink and we went to the ‘other’ playground at the other side of Bibra Lake. Joshua calls it “The Big One”, because it’s bigger than both the others, surprisingly enough.

Fusilli with bolognese sauce and garlic bread for dinner, then to bed for Joshua, quite early tonight, which is good because he’s been pretty tired the last few days. Deanne is making cupcakes as I write.

Tomorrow will be more of the same apart from it’s Tuesday, so Deanne takes Joshy in to kindy.

Scooter-Saurus

Dear Mum,

I was expecting a bit of a relaxing day today. I was somewhat mistaken!

Although to be fair Deanne and I heard Joshy come into our room at about seven this morning, but we weren’t really awake and he went back to bed, not getting up until about ten past nine. Which was a pretty laid back start to the day.

We had breakfast and got ready, then went to a playcentre called Tumblers, which Joshua had been to with Nana and asked if he could take us. We had offered him the choice between that and Sci-Tech, and he chose that. It was really good, in a leisure centre along with a big pool and water slide, a library and a few other odds and ends. We’ll probably pay for a day pass at some point and go do the pool, the slide and the playcentre. It’ll be a little bit like being at Centreparcs again.

We got home and heated up a few of my sausage rolls, they were very tasty, the picture is of Joshua eating one of them. In fact they are so good I would strongly recommend you try them, they are pretty easy to make (after all I can make them) and I’m sure you’ll have most of the ingredients. The recipe is here. While we were eating them Joshua watched an episode of Walking with Monsters, the one with a Siberian Scutosaurus in it from the start of the Triassic period.

After lunch Deanne wanted to do some paperwork so I agreed to Joshua’s idea to take his scooter to the park. He hasn’t used the scooter much so was a little unsteady at first, but he insisted we go to the playground we were at yesterday and actually managed the two or three kilometres there, and the same back after we had finished playing there. I tell you what, I’m not sure I’m going to manage my run this week, as two five kilometre runs has put a real crimp on the muscles in my legs.

By the time we got back it was nearing five and so Deanne made some wedges and slices for us and nuggets for Josh. I threw a salad together. I put a film on for Joshua, he started watching the Wallace and Gromit movie, The Curse of the Were Rabbit, but made me stop it because he got scared of the bits where Wallace was turning into a big rabbit. His hands shook and he looked really frightened, I felt quite bad. I’m pretty sure stuff like that didn’t affect me when I was little, but then I guess I was the youngest of four boys so was exposed to a lot more inappropriate movies than he has been. I was wondering about watching Star Wars with him, but think I’ll have to watch it myself first to make sure it’s okay for his delicate sensibilities.

He ended up watching Toy Story 3 while we ate, which he was much happier about.

I bathed him and then he asked if Deanne could help him dress and read him his story. We’re watching Silent Witness at the moment. Tomorrow I’m going to start working on the stuff Richard has sent me through. I shan’t say what I’m doing for him as these scientists are all a bit careful about not revealing what they are doing before publication.
