O Is For Octopus

Just a quickie tonight ’cause I’m tired from running round the lake today!

Spent most of the day looking through scientific papers and writing down grid references, say hi to Rich, Ana and Jasmine, by the way.

Went for the aforesaid run at about lunchtime, got back, had lunch and then did some more work. After that I went to pick Josh up from Julie’s house. The poor thing has a bit of a cold and so was a bit cry-ey over dinner and bath-time, even though he had some Calpol. In the car on the way home he said he had an itchy throat, poor little boy.. I’ll check on him before I go to sleep to make sure he’s okay and doesn’t have a temperature.

Made Fajitas for tea, quite nice but I need to put a bit more of the spice mix in next time, we got it in a spice jar, like the ones you get for e.g. herbs back in the UK, so it needs some fine tuning.

I may possibly have a few days off the ‘blog, as we have a lot to do around the house in preparation for the move in a week’s time, but I’ll write when I get a chance.

Will try and speak to you, Dad, Rich, Ana and Jasmine over the weekend.

The picture is the lollipop Josh made at kindy this week for the letter O, we were very impressed by his colouring in!

Ice Cream And Chocolate Sauce

Dear Mum,

It was great to speak to you and ToF this afternoon, hope the car service doesn’t cost too much!

Deanne dropped Joshua off this morning, even though she’s still under the weather. I got my running gear on and went to the park, it’s a few weeks since I ran so I took it easy and didn’t do the usual 1.5k, then 0.5k alternating run and walk, I just ran until it was too hard and then walked until I could run again. It still only took me about 46 minutes to get round the lake, so that’s not too bad.

I got a call from a colleague of the recruiter I went to see yesterday, to ask if I was interested in a role for iiNet, who supply our internet and phone line. I figured it couldn’t do any harm so said “why not?”

I did some bits and pieces of work and washing but the day flew past and it was soon time to pick Josh up. He came out of his class wearing a stethoscope he had made this week. He looked so cute, but sadly I wasn’t able to get a picture.

He had a snack then we played in the garden, after which we Skyped you. When we finished the call Josh watched a bit of TV and I finished making tea, bolognese. I also got a call from Olive, who was worried because she hasn’t heard from Julie since they went on holiday. I told her the reception is bad in the places they’ve been, so we’ve only received the occasional text and not too many phone calls.

After which I also got a Skype from three of my old colleagues, Rich, Steve and Nige, who seem in fine form. Skype really has made a big difference to emigrating, as I’m sure you are aware with two sons in different continents to that which they grew up in. It was great to see the guys again, although I didn’t find out much about what’s going on there because it mainly seemed to be me talking about what’s happening here. We’ll do it again though.

Deanne arrived home and we had dinner followed by ice cream and chocolate sauce as per the picture, then I put Josh to bed. He had the book he got out of the school library today for his bedtime story. Surprisingly about a dinosaur.

Tomorrow is Joshy Daddy day. No idea what we’re doing yet, although I think we’re going to do some reading practice with the “ABC Learning Eggs” I’ve signed up for. don’t know what they are or how they work but they’re meant to be pretty good so I’ve heard.

Power Cut

Dear Mum,

Deanne dropped Josh off this morning, I did a few bits and pieces on the laptop until my internet connection dropped off. I scratched my head for a few moments, until I had a vague recollection of the fact that someone drove into the local roadside power box the other night, it was bent and ugly and they had penned it off but it was working. However I surmised that they were probably fixing it.

I assumed it wouldn’t take too long so I tried to find a few things to do. Couldn’t hoover, couldn’t put the washing machine on, couldn’t even make anything warm for an early lunch, so eventually I decided that it had stopped raining enough for a run, so I put my kit on and headed to the park.

This time it took me about 36 minutes to run around the lake, that’s almost 10 km/h or 6 miles/h on average, which isn’t too bad a speed, to say it’s only my third attempt. As I was walking to the park I saw about five trucks and lots of men working at the side of the road to completely replace the power supply box. They were still there when I got back and the power was accordingly still offline.

I had some cold pasta from last night and a couple of slices of bread, plus an apple and a nutty bar thing for lunch, showered and then it was time to pick up the boy.

He had a good day today, he bought home a bracelet that Alice made for him, I believe he also made one for her but it’s still a little hard to get any details about his day out of him, although I know that he played with Alice, Ella and Penny at lunch time, they are three girls whose Mums knew each other at school and so the kids have known each other since they were born. All nice kids. He also told me that they were doing “d” for dinosaur today and so he got to correct his teacher on the names a few times. Apparently she couldn’t pronounce “pteranodon” right!

After getting home we went to the park and Joshua cycled, he must have done a good couple of kilometres and didn’t seem to be having any trouble at all, so we might even try cycling to the playground on the other side of the lake at some point. The men at work were gone by the time we got back and thankfully the power was back on.

For tea I made a potato and pumpkin cheesy bake and then for pudding (as per the picture) Josh and I had ice cream. Deanne didn’t want any, which I thought was very restrained of her.

Deanne is dropping him off again tomorrow, which is good as I have to get the house ready for the inspection on Thursday, amongst other things. Also Joshua is staying over at Nana’s house tomorrow night, which is quite a big thing. He seems very excited about it, it’ll be weird not having him for the night, but probably a good thing as I can continue cleaning and tidying. Also Bob is coming over to mow again, which is very kind of him, plus he’ll be able to meet Snuggles.

Run Fatboy Run

Dear Mum,
A slow-ish day today. I spent the morning looking for jobs. There are starting to be a few more about, so I might get something soon. Less than a month ’till the new financial year so definitely then, if not before.
I went for a run at midday. This time I gave it a bit more structure and ran a kilometre then walked for half a k. Apart from where the start of the run is marked, at the other side of the lake, they miss the 0.5k marker, which means I ran one and a half at that point. I was about fifteen minutes faster than last time, partly down to going faster, partly down to if not raining and me not detouring to look at bits of the lake. I took the picture round the other side of the lake.
I had lunch, after showering when I got home, a toasted cheese and tomato sandwich. Then did some more computing and played my guitar for a little while.
I made tea, chips, slice and salad, then Deanne got home. Julie and Rick we’re going to their friends house tonight, so didn’t drop Josh off until about half six. So Deanne and I had a surprisingly adult meal with a minimum of shouting and people saying “I don’t like this”.
When he got home we all had a bit of a chat then they left and he went to bed. Nothing much happening tonight, tomorrow I might go shopping as it’s pay day for Deanne.
Love

Run Forrest, Run!

Dear Mum,

Deanne took Joshua to kindy this morning so I spent a while looking at my emails and following up job adverts. Then, true to my word, I got my shorts, t-shirt and trainers on and went out the house to run (and maybe walk, a little bit) around the lake.

After about ten minutes it started raining, but the rain kind of came and went (as discussed previously) so I just kept going.  I had no idea when I started, but there were distance markers all the way around on the path and apparently the whole way round was 5.954 kilometres. That doesn’t sound like too much but it took me about an hour, with one short detour to look at the bird hide on the northern edge of the lake. I took the below picture near the path to the bird hide and thought it was interesting and different enough to stick up here.

When I got home I had a shower, got dressed and had lunch then watched last nights Top Gear, while I did some more work on my application letter for the job I mentioned yesterday.

I went to the Big W at Gateways shopping centre (not too far away), to pick up a photo we had printed of us at the beach for Joshua to take into kindy. We’re a bit late as a lot of the other kids have already taken their family photos in, but I think it’s just to stick on a board so the kids can show each other their parents.

I picked the boy up and handed the photo in, Joshua had got into trouble a few times today for various misdemeanours, I think part of it was tiredness but he also has a tendency to hug people…around the neck…quite firmly, we’ve been trying to stop him (for months!!) but he really likes hugging!

By a strange series of events I’m out in the evening the next three days, tomorrow is Joshua’s schools P&C meeting, Thursday I’m attending a writers group in the city, as Deanne told me I need to find some things to do other than sitting around in the house every day. On Friday I’m heading into town again to a small bar to an open mic’ night to meet a guy who’s interested in starting a band, he plays guitar and sings and writes songs and is also from the UK, a couple of years ago.

So I don’t know if I’m going to get around to writing the next few nights, but I’ll do my best.

Love

Dan
