Dear Mum,

As you can imagine it’s been a pretty busy few weeks, even the weekend was crazy.

On Friday Deanne went out with the Mum’s from Kindy for an Xmas meal, so Joshua and I went to get some fish and chips, which we ate at the playground at Riverton. During Daycare he had actually taken part in some facepainting (for the first time ever) so I thought I better capture it for posterity, which is the first picture.

Joshua seemed more interested in playing on the playground than eating his chips and potato scallops, but eventually he did take some time out from his busy schedule to have dinner. The second picture is of him looking through the spyglass at the park, this was after we had eaten and we played together for a bit, ho didn’t get to bed until about 9 o’clock.

On Saturday I did what remained of my pre-Christmas, Christmas shopping. I’ll send the UK contingent’s stuff out in the new year. Then I met with Deanne and Josh at the shopping centre at Success, I turned up just in time to stop at Miss Maude’s for a drink and a cake, which was nice. Then we did our food shopping and came home. It was super busy at the shops, but I still have a bit of a disconnect going in my head about Christmas being three days away because it’s sunny and hot!

On Sunday we had an impromptu trip to the Zoo, most of the animals were laying about relaxing, although it wasn’t such a hot day as a few lately, we’ve been up to the high thirties a couple of times. The best picture I got was probably the third one below of the Koala having a bit of a kip.

My final, slightly exciting, news is that I’ve actually got round to publishing my book on Amazon. If you or ToF want it I’ll chuck you a copy of the finished one straight to your Kindles, but if you happen to get a chance tell Rich he can even buy it in Brazil by going to the Brazilian Amazon website and searching for Dan Ladle. The cover of the book is the fourth picture, although I’ve updated it since I did that one but it hasn’t shown up on the site yet!

5.954 KM

Dear Mum,

Kind of the last day of Joshua’s holiday today as he’s at daycare tomorrow. So I gave him the choice of what to do for the day.

We started off reading some books in bed, then playing with his car ramp and some wool, which he usually uses to make bead necklaces and bracelets with. He wrapped the wool around the ramp and then pushed some of the cars down it. This kept him amused for a while. Then it was time for a snack so he watched a bit of TV and ate some fruit and a yoghurt.

We got washed and dressed and then spent some time playing with the tablet which lasted us until close to lunch time.

After lunch he wanted to take his scooter to Bibra Lake park, so we headed out at around one-ish and started scootering! At first he only wanted to go to the local playground, but then decided to head on to the medium one, which is quite a way away. The picture is from where he told me he was too tired and had to take a break from scooting and have a lie down on the grass, after which we ran around there for a while. After the rest stop we drove on to the playground and played there for about twenty minutes, then he asked if it was okay to go to the big playground, a little further around the lake. So we headed on.

It was there that we bumped into a couple of the kids (one of which is called Joshua) and their mum from the pre-primary class next to Joshua’s at kindy, so she and I had a chat while Josh climbed all the way up to the top and slid down a number of times, after which he insisted that I join him.

We were more than half way round the lake at this point, so we struck on towards home, which meant that by the time we finished we had circumnavigated the entire 5.954 KM circumference of the lake. I was tired, I hate to think how the poor boy felt, although it wasn’t hard to tell because as soon as we got home he lay on the sofa, asked for Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs and just crashed there until tea was ready.

We had garlic bread with a lasagne Deanne made last weekend and froze. It was very nice.

As I say, tomorrow is daycare and I have a few things to do. I’ll try and Skype you some time soon.

New Job…Sort Of

Dear Mum,

I dropped Josh off at school this morning and spent a bit of time playing with him and a few of his friends with the Play-Doh. They all started off cutting letters out, then Joshua and Ryder both rolled some snakes out, before it was time to pack up and I left.

I went to the library to drop off a couple of books, including the enormous dinosaur one Josh and I read to the end before I took him in, as per the picture. I popped to the shop and bought a few things as we needed some milk and Deanne wanted to do some baking tonight.

After I got home I started doing some of Richard’s work. It took me a bit to get my head round what I was meant to be doing but then I got into the swing of things and managed to get a rhythm going. I worked until lunchtime then took a break, heated up the last of my sausage rolls and watched an episode of Futurama while I ate.

Got back to the academia after finishing, then worked until it was time to pick the boy up.

I packed a little box with some dried apricots, sultanas and nutri grain (wheaty cereal that goes nicely with the fruit) along with a drink and we went to the ‘other’ playground at the other side of Bibra Lake. Joshua calls it “The Big One”, because it’s bigger than both the others, surprisingly enough.

Fusilli with bolognese sauce and garlic bread for dinner, then to bed for Joshua, quite early tonight, which is good because he’s been pretty tired the last few days. Deanne is making cupcakes as I write.

Tomorrow will be more of the same apart from it’s Tuesday, so Deanne takes Joshy in to kindy.

Scooter-Saurus

Dear Mum,

I was expecting a bit of a relaxing day today. I was somewhat mistaken!

Although to be fair Deanne and I heard Joshy come into our room at about seven this morning, but we weren’t really awake and he went back to bed, not getting up until about ten past nine. Which was a pretty laid back start to the day.

We had breakfast and got ready, then went to a playcentre called Tumblers, which Joshua had been to with Nana and asked if he could take us. We had offered him the choice between that and Sci-Tech, and he chose that. It was really good, in a leisure centre along with a big pool and water slide, a library and a few other odds and ends. We’ll probably pay for a day pass at some point and go do the pool, the slide and the playcentre. It’ll be a little bit like being at Centreparcs again.

We got home and heated up a few of my sausage rolls, they were very tasty, the picture is of Joshua eating one of them. In fact they are so good I would strongly recommend you try them, they are pretty easy to make (after all I can make them) and I’m sure you’ll have most of the ingredients. The recipe is here. While we were eating them Joshua watched an episode of Walking with Monsters, the one with a Siberian Scutosaurus in it from the start of the Triassic period.

After lunch Deanne wanted to do some paperwork so I agreed to Joshua’s idea to take his scooter to the park. He hasn’t used the scooter much so was a little unsteady at first, but he insisted we go to the playground we were at yesterday and actually managed the two or three kilometres there, and the same back after we had finished playing there. I tell you what, I’m not sure I’m going to manage my run this week, as two five kilometre runs has put a real crimp on the muscles in my legs.

By the time we got back it was nearing five and so Deanne made some wedges and slices for us and nuggets for Josh. I threw a salad together. I put a film on for Joshua, he started watching the Wallace and Gromit movie, The Curse of the Were Rabbit, but made me stop it because he got scared of the bits where Wallace was turning into a big rabbit. His hands shook and he looked really frightened, I felt quite bad. I’m pretty sure stuff like that didn’t affect me when I was little, but then I guess I was the youngest of four boys so was exposed to a lot more inappropriate movies than he has been. I was wondering about watching Star Wars with him, but think I’ll have to watch it myself first to make sure it’s okay for his delicate sensibilities.

He ended up watching Toy Story 3 while we ate, which he was much happier about.

I bathed him and then he asked if Deanne could help him dress and read him his story. We’re watching Silent Witness at the moment. Tomorrow I’m going to start working on the stuff Richard has sent me through. I shan’t say what I’m doing for him as these scientists are all a bit careful about not revealing what they are doing before publication.

Sausage Rolls

Sausage Rolls

Sausage Rolls

Dear Mum,

A busy day today!

We got up relatively early, had breakfast, showered (I shaved, Paul :-p), got dressed and headed out to look at a couple of beds at the place we went the other week. Then we went to a shop called Spotlight, which sells crafting stuff and bought some pipe-cleaners and beads for Joshy to do some threading, and some scissors for him so he can cut things out, finally some wool so we can make some necklaces or whatever with the beads.

After that we went to Coles and grabbed a few essentials, fruit and cheese and things. By the time we got home it was getting towards twelve o’clock, but we decided to just have a snack (we bought some ring doughnuts and iced buns and ate them), then Josh and Deanne got on their bikes and we went to the Lake, they cycled round while I walked/ran near Joshua so as to keep him from getting into trouble. Of course I didn’t do a very good job because as we set off I ran down the drive with him and he fell at the bottom, on the road, grazing the back of both of his hands. He cried quite a lot, but after we gave him a few cuddles and kisses he was okay.

We got as far round the lake as the small playground on the other side, must be about two or three kilometres, and then Joshy played for about half an hour. On the way back he started to get a bit tired as we got near home, but managed to get all the way without too much help. I was quite impressed. I will get a bike at some point, but it’s not top on the priority list at the moment.

We had toasted cheese sarnies for lunch and Josh watched Ice Age 3 -Dawn Of The Dinosaurs (again) as we ate. Julie came round for a bit, but you know that ’cause that is around when we Skyped.

After we talked to you I made some veggie sausage rolls, as there were some ingredients left over from when I last made them, they look pretty good but we haven’t eaten any yet as we had far too much junk food today and couldn’t fit anything else in. They’ll be good for lunches next week and we might have some tomorrow too.

Deanne did a risotto for tea, which was very nice with some garlic bread, then I put Josh to bed. Tomorrow we have nothing particularly planned so we’ll get up and see what happens.

Bibra Lake

Dear Mum,

We had a relatively relaxed Sunday. We got up a bit later than usual and did our breakfast stuff. We stayed at home for a little bit but then went out to visit Bibra Lake, which is a big lake surrounded by a cycle track, grassy areas you can sit and have a picnic, and playgrounds.

When we arrived Joshua had a quick climb up the equipment then slid down a curly slide (as per the picture). Then we went for a walk around the lake until we found somewhere nice to have a little picnic I had put together, nothing special, just a couple of drinks, some muesli bars and some dried fruit for Joshy.

Then we headed back to the playground and gave him ten minutes to play before we had to leave again, to get home and see Sharon and Rick who had come round to Julie’s for lunch. We ate lunch and chatted with them about all sorts of things, but then Joshua started being a bit grumpy so I put him to bed and read him a story.

Of course he told us he wasn’t tired but then slept for about three hours, hopefully that’ll be enough to get him through two days of kindergarten this week! Deanne and I watched a movie while he was asleep and Julie, Sharon and the two Ricks hung out in the garden chatting and finishing lunch.

When Joshua woke up again it was almost tea time but we let him watch the end of the film with us (it was about a family that bought a zoo, so fairly tame), then he had beans and toast, followed by an ice lolly, then he got ready for bed.

Tomorrow he is, of course, at kindy so I’m going to try calling people back whom I’ve sent my CV to, to try and find out if they are in any way interested in me or if there’s anything I need to do differently to actually get them to give me some work.

In The Wars

Dear Mum,

This morning Julie, Josh and I went to a dinosaur themed play centre. We arrived at about 9:30 and stayed until midday. I’ve attached a picture at the bottom which is actually Joshua, but he’s travelling down the curly slide so fast that he’s just a blur 🙂

While we were there he had an ice lolly and a blackcurrant and apple drink, then at about 11:30 Nana bought a big bowl of potato wedges and he had a few of them (I tried to put him off as it as near lunch time but he did seem very hungry and didn’t heed my suggestions. He had a great time and only had one small incident where he accidentally ran into a mesh fence and hurt his nose a little bit, but he only took a minute to recover before he was up and running again.

I forgot to take socks for him with us (they have to wear socks on the play centre equipmment) so i had to buy him some there. They only cost three dollars and have dinosaurs on them, and weren’t actually bad quality, so I didn’t feel too bad about it.

When we got back at about half twelve I made some little pizzas for us and he ate the whole thing. Pretty sure he’s growing!

I put him down for a nap but while I was reading a story to him (Winnie The Pooh – The Heffalump) but half way through he did something which must have knocked off a scab on his ankle, which he got at kindy earlier this week. I managed to get my hand under his leg before he bled on Julie’s cream carpets (he bled a lot!) and took him to the bath, where it got a bit of a wash and a plaster on it.

After his nap we went to the park down the road and played on the playground for a while, although before we started playing he had insisted on taking the book he brought home from school and reading it 🙂 However while he was playing he tried to drop down between tow bits of metal and headbutted the front and back of his head on them. He cried…third time today 😦

But it didn’t take too long for him to recover and then we finished playing, had a quick bite to eat and then came home (after watching some ants carrying some bits of oats from the bar we had been eating back to their nest.

Anyway, that’s the most he’s hurt himself for some time, hopefully the bad luck comes in threes thing is going to hold and that’s the end of it.

Tomorrow we’re going to scitech, which is the science and technology museum place, so that should be fun.

Love

Dan
