Ice Cream And Chocolate Sauce

Dear Mum,

It was great to speak to you and ToF this afternoon, hope the car service doesn’t cost too much!

Deanne dropped Joshua off this morning, even though she’s still under the weather. I got my running gear on and went to the park, it’s a few weeks since I ran so I took it easy and didn’t do the usual 1.5k, then 0.5k alternating run and walk, I just ran until it was too hard and then walked until I could run again. It still only took me about 46 minutes to get round the lake, so that’s not too bad.

I got a call from a colleague of the recruiter I went to see yesterday, to ask if I was interested in a role for iiNet, who supply our internet and phone line. I figured it couldn’t do any harm so said “why not?”

I did some bits and pieces of work and washing but the day flew past and it was soon time to pick Josh up. He came out of his class wearing a stethoscope he had made this week. He looked so cute, but sadly I wasn’t able to get a picture.

He had a snack then we played in the garden, after which we Skyped you. When we finished the call Josh watched a bit of TV and I finished making tea, bolognese. I also got a call from Olive, who was worried because she hasn’t heard from Julie since they went on holiday. I told her the reception is bad in the places they’ve been, so we’ve only received the occasional text and not too many phone calls.

After which I also got a Skype from three of my old colleagues, Rich, Steve and Nige, who seem in fine form. Skype really has made a big difference to emigrating, as I’m sure you are aware with two sons in different continents to that which they grew up in. It was great to see the guys again, although I didn’t find out much about what’s going on there because it mainly seemed to be me talking about what’s happening here. We’ll do it again though.

Deanne arrived home and we had dinner followed by ice cream and chocolate sauce as per the picture, then I put Josh to bed. He had the book he got out of the school library today for his bedtime story. Surprisingly about a dinosaur.

Tomorrow is Joshy Daddy day. No idea what we’re doing yet, although I think we’re going to do some reading practice with the “ABC Learning Eggs” I’ve signed up for. don’t know what they are or how they work but they’re meant to be pretty good so I’ve heard.

Flying Joshua

Dear Mum,

A fairly normal start to the morning for Joshua, he brought a few books into our room and I read them to him before we got up and had breakfast. He got dressed as I showered then we packed his bag and headed out for school.

Deanne meanwhile was heading to the doctors to have a mole removed, a fairly standard procedure over here. However as she got to work her back started hurting worse than it had the other week, so she’s booked herself in to see someone about it tomorrow. The poor thing is in the wars at the moment!

At school Josh did some puzzles with Ella, they seemed to be having fun so I left them to it and came home to get on with some housework and then some grid-reference finding for Rich’s science project.

I got a message telling me Josh’s books were due back at the library on Friday, so I packed and took them with me to collect him this afternoon. After dropping them off and picking some new books, one of which was about ancient marine creatures rather than dinosaurs for a change, we walked over to the playground near the library.

He particularly enjoyed the flying fox, which he grabbed on to, asked me to swing him half way along the track, then dropped seven feet into the sand and laughed his head off. It was so funny he did it a number of times, which was when I took the photo.

I also got an email from the new boss asking if I can start on Friday. I said yes! Although I still have another appointment with a recruitment consultant tomorrow afternoon, which I figured I’d go to anyway as it was already booked.

Dee’s back appointment is in the afternoon, so I’ll go along for some moral support. Bob picks Josh up from school tomorrow so there will be a bit of to-ing and fro-ing to coordinate all our movements.

He’s Out

Dear Mum,
To say we didn’t have much planned today if turned out quite busy.
After getting ready this morning we went to the library, to drop off Deanne and Josh’s books, and so Joshua could get some more. He picked two dinosaur books and one about ancient amphibians!
We went to the shops on the way back to get some presents for the twins’ birthdays on Wednesday. Bob met us there and then came home with us, where we had drinks and some biscuits. Dee had made them beforehand and frozen the mixture so just took the block of dough out, cut it into slices and baked it. Lovely.
Toasted cheese sarnies for lunch then we went to the local shops, Dee and I walked and Josh took his bike as it’s not that local. When we got home we let Snugs go out into the back garden. He was a little nervous and we bought him back in pretty quickly, but I think it won’t take him too long to get the hang of it. He did have another quick sojourn after tea but seems a little agoraphobic and came back pretty quickly.
Tea was risotto and garlic bread. This evening I’m going to read my amazing proof copy of The Long Mars.
Don’t know what we’re doing tomorrow yet. Might Skype you if we’re home in the afternoon.
Love

New Job…Sort Of

Dear Mum,

I dropped Josh off at school this morning and spent a bit of time playing with him and a few of his friends with the Play-Doh. They all started off cutting letters out, then Joshua and Ryder both rolled some snakes out, before it was time to pack up and I left.

I went to the library to drop off a couple of books, including the enormous dinosaur one Josh and I read to the end before I took him in, as per the picture. I popped to the shop and bought a few things as we needed some milk and Deanne wanted to do some baking tonight.

After I got home I started doing some of Richard’s work. It took me a bit to get my head round what I was meant to be doing but then I got into the swing of things and managed to get a rhythm going. I worked until lunchtime then took a break, heated up the last of my sausage rolls and watched an episode of Futurama while I ate.

Got back to the academia after finishing, then worked until it was time to pick the boy up.

I packed a little box with some dried apricots, sultanas and nutri grain (wheaty cereal that goes nicely with the fruit) along with a drink and we went to the ‘other’ playground at the other side of Bibra Lake. Joshua calls it “The Big One”, because it’s bigger than both the others, surprisingly enough.

Fusilli with bolognese sauce and garlic bread for dinner, then to bed for Joshua, quite early tonight, which is good because he’s been pretty tired the last few days. Deanne is making cupcakes as I write.

Tomorrow will be more of the same apart from it’s Tuesday, so Deanne takes Joshy in to kindy.

Bank

Dear Mum,

If you send me the address for the Hotmail account I’ll see if I can get it set up to send these posts to! Hope Paul and his enormous family are all okay. Joshua definitely seems to have some natural history genes, but not sure if they have skipped a generation on my side or come straight from Deanne (more likely)!

This morning Joshua and I had some chores to do. First and foremost was taking his library books and DVD back, which we did first thing. He got three more books and another Pooh DVD out and has already watched the DVD all the way through once, then part way through in French (his decision, not mine) and had two of the three stories, one before we collected Deanne this afternoon, one at bedtime.

We also went to the bank to pay in some money Bob gave us, because the man can’t seem to stop giving us money. Not that we’re ungrateful but I hope he isn’t making himself short of cash for our sakes. There was an indoor farm at Bull Creek shopping centre so we had a quick look at the animals, then went to the pharmacy so I could buy some more blood test sticks.

After lunch we had to go to the bank again to get a cheque made out so we could go buy Deanne’s new car. We picked her up from work and went straight to Fremantle so she could collect it, so now we’re a two-car-family and almost have a house (roll on Thursday).

Tomorrow I’m going to take Joshua to the Dinosaur Discovery exhibition at the Museum of WA, it has lots of animatronic prehistoric Australian reptiles and should be a good way to amuse Joshua for the afternoon.

Blood

Dear Mum,

I finally have my appointment with the endocrinologist next week, so after dropping Joshua off this morning I went to the doctors to have a blood test. It was fine but the nurse insisted on asking me about how long it took to get from Heathrow to Gatwick, as she is planning a holiday to the UK and thought I might be able to help her understand a bit about London.

When I got home I did our ironing and put on about three loads of washing, one of which I still need to hang out, but I’ll do that in the morning before I go out.

I picked Deanne up from work at four so we could drop an application in, to rent a house I looked at last week. The whole house renting thing is a bit on the complicated side but we’re slowly getting the hang of how it all works. Now we just need to wait a couple of days to see if the owners like the cut of our gib.

We came home afterwards and picked Joshua up. He was tired after kindy and wanted to stay at home and watch a bit of TV before going out again, then we went to the library to take his books and DVDs back and get some more for him. After that we drove to Fremantle to look at a small car which we’re thinking about buying, then home for dinner and a bit of a relax after another hard day.

Tomorrow is Joshy/Nana day but there was a sign up at kindy saying they needed someone to help out in the morning, so I put my name down. Joshua’s teacher told me I shouldn’t put myself out as Joshua isn’t in tomorrow, but I told her that it was his day with Nana and so I needed something to get me out the house and would be happy to.

Library

Dear Mum,
This morning Josh and I went to the library. He was so excited when I told him he could pick any five books (or DVDs) that he ran up to the boxes of books for young ‘uns and somehow managed to get two dinosaur books and one about an elephant. I helped him pick one from the older kids section which was a fold out dinosaur one, the final thing was a dinosaur train DVD.
When we got home I made a packed lunch and we went to the park, had lunch (Joshy had a Vegemite Sarnie) then played for an hour or two.
He watched some of his lent video and then we went to collect Deanne at four o’clock.
The three of us went to Heirisson island, initially he played on the playground, then we had a snack and walked to the other end of the island and saw the ‘roos. Joshua was quite excited because they were up and about this time as it was later in the day and a bit cooler than last time we went.
Tomorrow we’re all going out for lunch because it’s Julie’s birthday.
Love
Dan
