Dear Mum,

As you can imagine it’s been a pretty busy few weeks, even the weekend was crazy.

On Friday Deanne went out with the Mum’s from Kindy for an Xmas meal, so Joshua and I went to get some fish and chips, which we ate at the playground at Riverton. During Daycare he had actually taken part in some facepainting (for the first time ever) so I thought I better capture it for posterity, which is the first picture.

Joshua seemed more interested in playing on the playground than eating his chips and potato scallops, but eventually he did take some time out from his busy schedule to have dinner. The second picture is of him looking through the spyglass at the park, this was after we had eaten and we played together for a bit, ho didn’t get to bed until about 9 o’clock.

On Saturday I did what remained of my pre-Christmas, Christmas shopping. I’ll send the UK contingent’s stuff out in the new year. Then I met with Deanne and Josh at the shopping centre at Success, I turned up just in time to stop at Miss Maude’s for a drink and a cake, which was nice. Then we did our food shopping and came home. It was super busy at the shops, but I still have a bit of a disconnect going in my head about Christmas being three days away because it’s sunny and hot!

On Sunday we had an impromptu trip to the Zoo, most of the animals were laying about relaxing, although it wasn’t such a hot day as a few lately, we’ve been up to the high thirties a couple of times. The best picture I got was probably the third one below of the Koala having a bit of a kip.

My final, slightly exciting, news is that I’ve actually got round to publishing my book on Amazon. If you or ToF want it I’ll chuck you a copy of the finished one straight to your Kindles, but if you happen to get a chance tell Rich he can even buy it in Brazil by going to the Brazilian Amazon website and searching for Dan Ladle. The cover of the book is the fourth picture, although I’ve updated it since I did that one but it hasn’t shown up on the site yet!

Firemen’s Hats

Dear Mum,

I had a good time at school this morning, first of all helping the kindy (not pre-primary) kids cut out a fireman’s hat, which they all thought was brilliant. Then I supervised them taping some boxes together and painting them red to start making a fire engine. It was  It was really good fun and all the kindy kids seemed to remember me from the last few times I’ve been in. I’m pleased I can continue to do the odd Monday to help out as it is great to see what they do in the daytime.

I got home at about lunchtime and had one of my arancini balls. I then fired up the computer and did an hour or so of Rich’s work before heading in to pick the boy up again.

Josh watched a bit of TV while he was having his snack, then went and played outside, before asking if he could do some more of the ABC Reading Eggs. While he was doing that I made a cheesy pasta bake, topped with the leftover breadcrumbs I had whizzed up in the food processor for the balls yesterday. We had raspberry jelly and ice cream for pudding, which was nice.

Back to work tomorrow! The picture is of Snuggles relaxing on the sofa this afternoon.

Run Forrest, Run!

Dear Mum,

Deanne took Joshua to kindy this morning so I spent a while looking at my emails and following up job adverts. Then, true to my word, I got my shorts, t-shirt and trainers on and went out the house to run (and maybe walk, a little bit) around the lake.

After about ten minutes it started raining, but the rain kind of came and went (as discussed previously) so I just kept going.  I had no idea when I started, but there were distance markers all the way around on the path and apparently the whole way round was 5.954 kilometres. That doesn’t sound like too much but it took me about an hour, with one short detour to look at the bird hide on the northern edge of the lake. I took the below picture near the path to the bird hide and thought it was interesting and different enough to stick up here.

When I got home I had a shower, got dressed and had lunch then watched last nights Top Gear, while I did some more work on my application letter for the job I mentioned yesterday.

I went to the Big W at Gateways shopping centre (not too far away), to pick up a photo we had printed of us at the beach for Joshua to take into kindy. We’re a bit late as a lot of the other kids have already taken their family photos in, but I think it’s just to stick on a board so the kids can show each other their parents.

I picked the boy up and handed the photo in, Joshua had got into trouble a few times today for various misdemeanours, I think part of it was tiredness but he also has a tendency to hug people…around the neck…quite firmly, we’ve been trying to stop him (for months!!) but he really likes hugging!

By a strange series of events I’m out in the evening the next three days, tomorrow is Joshua’s schools P&C meeting, Thursday I’m attending a writers group in the city, as Deanne told me I need to find some things to do other than sitting around in the house every day. On Friday I’m heading into town again to a small bar to an open mic’ night to meet a guy who’s interested in starting a band, he plays guitar and sings and writes songs and is also from the UK, a couple of years ago.

So I don’t know if I’m going to get around to writing the next few nights, but I’ll do my best.

All Change

Dear Mum,

An interesting day today!

Julie dropped Joshua off and picked him up as it’s “Julie Wednesday”, whether he’s at home or at Kindy…and he was at kindy this Wednesday. So I was at home doing things today. I had quite a productive day and managed to do a good deal of the things I had planned.

I started off by sorting out a flu jab for myself, thankfully something I don’t have to pay for 🙂 I also wrote to Diabetes WA to see if they could recommend any insurance companies who might give me preferential rates as a Diabetic, I got a response from one of their people, who gave me another person to contact, so I did.

Then I headed out. Deanne bought a bag a couple of months back and the outer layer of it broke after she’d only used it a couple of times, so I took it back for her. However on the way to the shops I got a phone call (our car does hands free so I was okay to take it), it was the woman who i sent my CV to yesterday, she asked if it was okay to talk and I told her I was driving but as long as I didn’t need to write anything down.

We talked for about five or ten minutes about what I did at Trent, the job is a change one so I had plenty to talk about! She seemed fairly happy with what she heard and I’ve got an interview on Monday, so fingers crossed (again). I do have a suspicion I’m better at the change stuff than I was at security…or at least I’m better at talking about it!

I gave Deanne a call then actually went in to the shops. I tell you what, the UK could learn a thing or two about customer service. The lady in the shop looked at the bag, said it was terrible, then refunded the money onto my card, even though it had been bought on Deanne’s! I filled the car up with petrol, half a tank for about $44, then came home, had lunch and did a few bits and pieces around the house, including starting on the ironing, which I’ll finish tomorrow.

Talking of which I’m going to the doctors tomorrow for the aforesaid flu vaccination, Josh is with Nana and I’m checking I remember how change works. No pictures today I’m afraid.

Bike

Dear Mum,

It has actually been quite a quiet day today, we did a fair bit of clothes and bedclothes washing, along with hanging out and folding. i probably need to do a bit of ironing tonight so won’t write much.

Joshua and I made a picture from the things we collected down South yesterday, glueing the honky nuts. leaves and pine needle type foliage to a piece of paper. I’ll try and take a photo of it tomorrow to send you. It was of course a picture of dinosaurs!

This afternoon we went to the house of a man who was selling a bicycle, which Deanne bought. So I’m the only one without a bike now and need to start looking for something so we can all go out riding together.

Julie and Rick got back from their holiday at about 3pm, then Deanne made potato wedges and slices for tea. Joshy had fish fingers and Julie and Rick had sausages and pork chops. I made a salad.

Tomorrow is kindy day again so I’m at home, but another job has come up so I’m going to prepare and send off my CV for that.

Tell Me Why…

Dear Mum,

Monday again! It’s been quite a busy day but I’ve been working most of this evening on my book as I’ve found a decent publisher who accepts electronic copy, so I’ve been working on that tonight.

Deanne took Josh to Kindy so I could go to my interview. It went okay but I wasn’t really suitable for the job I’d gone for, however the nice man gave me the phone number of someone in another institution who I can call and try and wheedle a job out of. He also called her and left a voice-mail for her telling her how good I was, so that’s pretty good. I haven’t managed to contact her yet but I’ll keep trying.

Picked Joshy up from Kindy this a’vo and he seemed perfectly happy, although happy to see me too. Apparently he emptied the sand out of his shoes on the grass before he went back inside after playtime today 🙂 He also did some writing on the computer, although I’ve yet to see the fruits of this labour.

Deanne had a meeting with her CEO today, which went pretty well by the sound of things.

Tomorrow I’m going to try and get my manuscript finished and sent if I can, as well as organising some more house viewings for Wednesday and probably some other bits and pieces.

Oh yes, I also called the NDSS and checked to see if I can get cheap blood test sticks, as they are the thing I’m going to run out of first, it appears that I can, although they’re still going to cost me around eight dollars a tub :-S

Hot, Hot, Hot (Without Oscar And Arabella)

Dear Mum,

Today it was Julie’s turn to drop Josh off at Kindy, Deanne took her, as she had the car today to be at work for an early meeting and to show Nana what to do when she got there. However something must have upset Joshua because when they left he reacted the same way as he had on Monday, crying and screaming and trying to run after them, etc. 😦

My day was mostly spent completing my CV for this job I’m going for, however it’s all done and sent off now so that’s (probably) good.

At about three it was time for Julie to pick Joshua up, after which she was going to collect Big Nana then come home and spend some time together so I made myself rare. But as it turns out three days at Kindy was a bit much for him and he fell asleep in the car on the way to Olive’s house and then stayed asleep until he was home and in his own bed, where he stayed for an hour and a half.

Meanwhile I had walked over to Bull Creek shops, which doesn’t seem that far in the car but took me twenty minutes in the burning hot sun, don’t worry I’d suntan lotioned myself up but it seemed a long twenty minutes. I also took a can of Diet Coke with me, which I think was just as well. When I got there I went to look around Woolworth’s at the groceries, which was interesting if a little terrifying. The few things I actually recognise cost about twice as much as the things I don’t, I guess that’s not surprising as the brands I know must mainly be European. It was interesting though, and also because the “deals” they do tend to be 25 or 50 percent off rather than e.g. 10p off as I’d have expected in England.

After that I went to the bank and changed the PIN number on my final bank card so now I have a(n over)full set of bank cards in my wallet and nothing to spend on any of them until Deanne starts to get paid.

Joshua is at Day Care tomorrow and I’m dropping him off so it’ll be interesting to see how he goes in a different place. He remembers playing with the Dinosaur Lego when we visited the other week, and when I was talking about it with him tonight said that he would try not to cry. I told him that it’s okay if he cries and that he just needs to tell me how he’s feeling.

Anyway, I’ll obviously tell you how that goes tomorrow so that’ll be something to look forward to.

Love

Dan
