At Work

Dear Mum,

It’s currently 19 minutes past two and I am sitting in the kitchen at work with my laptop. I don’t seem to have any very pressing things to do so I thought I’d give you a quick update (with some pictures).

Snuggles finally seems to have got over his earlier catty-mental issues. He is now going outside to wee and, on the occasions he needs to, going in his litter tray. He is still scratching the furniture a bit but not half so much as he was doing. He’s also become a lot more snuggly lately and has spent a lot of time sitting with, or on, us. Which is nice.

Our little mini-break to Gingin went well. The first picture is of the “black hole”, at the Gravity Discovery Centre, in which the balls roll round and round until they reach the bottom. The second one is the boy playing with the gravity spring, which shows you how gravitational waves travel.

The park at Gingin was good, although I was a little worried about the sign in the grassland nearby!

Slightly more recently, I took the young ‘un to the park and he had a bit of a scoot around. We also played with the new football (Australian) that Nanna and Poppy Richard brought back from their holiday for him.

I got a new review on Amazon, which is sparing with its word count but extremely positive. I’m quite pleased about it.

The last picture is one that I’m sure will bring back lots of memories for you (it certainly does for me) of when you used to make cakes and would offer us the spatula/whisk when you were done. I can’t remember what this particular sweet was, as we’ve made a lot of cakes and things lately, but he really enjoyed it!

As mentioned on Skype, we went out for a Father’s Day breakfast on Sunday morning, to a little bookshop near the river that has a rather good café in it, I had a full breakfast, which was rather filling. We might try and take you there when you visit, if we have the time. We then went to the park nearby for a walk, and so he could play on the playground. Bob came over in the afternoon and then we watched a film, which we haven’t done for ages. It was a lovely day!

Gotta go now, soon be time to get back to work.

Love

Dan

Happy Zombie Jesus Day

Dear Mum,

I saw the title of this post on a social network somewhere, referring to the fact that if someone is raised from the dead you tend to refer to them as a zombie! Well, I thought it was funny! I shall now use the acronym ZJD when talking about Easter.

I tried calling you a couple of times this weekend but seemed to miss you somehow. We have had an utterly bonkers few days, I was off work on Friday and today. The first day off was spent preparing food and going down to visit Janice in Mandurah. There was lots of food and good company, plus we got to meet (Richard’s son) Kasey’s girlfriend, seems like a nice lass.

On Saturday I took Josh to Garden City to exchange a new alarm clock that has issues with the display, works otherwise though. Deanne stayed at home and did some coursework. We swapped the clock, then had a look in Myers at the Octonauts toys (think that was the highlight for Joshua) then stopped for a drink, Joshy had a babycino and a heart shaped shortbread biscuit, mine was a Diet Coke.

Yesterday Bob popped over in the morning at about ten, he had a cup of tea and we all chatted, while Joshua played with his Lego and did some colouring, then went outside to play on his trampoline, while Bob and I threw his frisbee and a couple of bouncy balls over the top at him. He thought it was great. After Bob had left we went to Julie’s for lunch. Donna has been down for a few days and she was leaving this morning, so we went over to spend a bit of time before she went. However Joshy stayed the night so he could go to the airport with them this morning.

Today Deanne and I got a bit of a lie in, only waking up at about half eight, which is almost unheard of these days. I got up and made some sausage mix to start preparing for Joshua’s family party next weekend, I froze the mix then not long afterwards Julie and Rick dropped the young ‘un off.

Donna had given him a sort of big roll of paper which has dinosaurs on to colour in, most of the day was spent doing that while Dee did some more work, although we did go for a walk at about four, during which we happened upon one of Joshua’s classmates, Chloe, who only lives a couple of streets away.

The pictures are of Joshua helping to make a cake, along with the shopping list he wrote, for 320 grams of caster sugar (plus a picture of a balloon with Joshua’s face and hair) which he and I bought on the way back from Garden City on Saturday.

Josh's Shopping List

Josh’s Shopping List

Eating Out(side)

Dear Mum,

Thank goodness it’s the weekend! We had a slight lie in, getting up at about seven o’clock but had to get ready and go shopping first thing, as we were totally out of various things, not least of which was dishwasher tablets and ice cream.

We got home at about half ten but then had to race to Garden City as we had a date to meet up with Gemma, who is over, very briefly, from Sydney for her Big Nana’s 90th birthday party this weekend. We went to Miss Maud’s, a Swedish café selling various tasty cakes and sweets, including a chocolate éclair, which is exactly what I had. Josh had a marshmallow santa face, Deanne had a chocolate bombe thing and Gemma’s was a lemon cake. There was also a lot of talking and catching up to be done, Joshua was particularly well behaved, although towards the end of the time I did have to lend him my phone to allow him to amuse himself with the Cbeebies app.

Josh and I came home and had cheese sandwiches (I told him the old “why will you never be hungry at the beach – because of the sand-which-is there” joke, which he thought about for quite some time), but Deanne skipped lunch as the cake had been enough for her, she went out and picked her Mum up and they went back to Garden City together so Dee could choose her birthday presents and Julie could buy them. By all accounts they had quite a good time.

When she got back we put one of the chairs from our new table in the car to take back to Bunnings, it was broken when it arrived so we gave it back and took one of the ones which was on display. They did try to offer us one they had in the store room but it was a slightly different design and so we explained that it would be a bit weird to have nine identical chairs and one different one!

After that we tried to go to IKEA to get some cutlery to go with our plastic crockery (is that a misnomer?). However we arrived at five on the dot and discovered, much to our consternation, that five is when it shuts on a Saturday. Rubbish!

I took a picture of the table, from where I was sitting for tea tonight as I was digesting and Dee and Josh had popped inside the house. I made a cheesy tomato pasta which everyone seemed to enjoy. Joshy and I also had some of the aforesaid ice cream for pudding.

Tomorrow we’re going to do some Joshua things, as so far the weekend has been a bit adult oriented. We’ll probably try and Skype if we’re in at the right time.

Our Outdoor Table

Our Outdoor Table

New Table

Dear Mum,
Just thought I’d say hi, and that I finished building our new outdoor table (with Josh’s help) tonight. It’s very good but it was too dark to take a picture by the time we’d finished.
Therefore I’ve included a picture I took the other day. The cake was supplied by work for somebody’s birthday. I’d forgotten what working in the private sector was like, fringe benefits!

The Park Of Kings

Dear Mum,

Deanne just commented that I look really tired, so I’ll keep this short!

We went to Kings Park today as a new (refurbished) part has opened with a playground. We went quite early, which is lucky as this afternoon it chucked it down as if the end was nigh. We also walked (cycled in Joshua’s case) to the café and had a drink and a cake.

The park had a sort of cage the kids could climb into, a maze of corrugated iron and, of course, some fantastic plants to see as we walked back and forth. I’ve included four pictures, two of Josh playing, one of a kangaroo paw we saw and then one of Josh this afternoon near tea time (after a nap).

How Old

Dear Mum,
Had a great party today. Deanne made lots of great food including my favourite, which is her caramel slice. Got a wonderful birthday cake which was a bit like an inferno, what with having 40 candles on top of it!
Everyone seemed surprised when they found out how old I’ll be tomorrow, which is nice. The picture was taken towards the end of the festivities as everyone was leaving.
Once again Joshua was really well behaved, he did some art after we’d eaten and got lots of compliments for his penmanship.
He’s at school tomorrow but Deanne is off work so we can go into Garden City, after my medical, for a bit of a shop and some cake. Will try and Skype after we collect the boy from kindy.

Visitors

Dear Mum,
Joshua and I played with his Playmobil toys this morning. We stopped at about nine as he fancied making a foodimal, from Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2. As he owns a little toy one we decided we’d try a fruit cockatiel. You can see how it turned out below.
I did a few bits of housework then we had lunch, I had a cheese and sun-dried tomato toasted sandwich, Josh went for a tin of spaghetti. After lunch we played in the garden for a bit, mainly throwing a football back and forth.
Deanne came home early, then our guests arrived. Emma brought Penny and her big sister Lillian over and they spent the afternoon playing while the three adults chatted and ate lots of cake. Emma arrived with some cupcakes they had made and we had lemon cake, banana cake and caramel slice that Deanne had baked. There was a lot of cake!
Everyone had fun and apparently Penny and Josh did exactly the same things afterwards, sitting on their respective sofas, curled up watching TV.
No problems putting the boy to bed tonight, thank goodness, hopefully we’ve seen the end of the sasquash night fears!
Josh wants to go to the Triassic Fun Park tomorrow, we have a free pass from his birthday party to get in free.
Love
Dan
