Happy Christmas

Dear Mum,
Hope you’ve had a good day, I tried Skyping Rich a few times but I suspect you’re at one of the many parties, you mentioned, with him.
We had a brilliant day ourselves. Josh came into our room at about six to report that Santa had been, so we got up and opened a bunch of presents, including the two boxes of Lego, dinosaur themed Matchbox cars and the Old Spinosaurus from Dinosaur Train, that you bought him.
He was very pleased but just a little disappointed that he hadn’t got the Octopod from the Octonauts, which he had written himself on his Xmas list. He was, therefore, rather glad when Pops turned up with some more presents, including the Octopod!
We made breakfast, fruit toast, nice bread, hash browns, poached eggs, etc. and chatted to Bob until about half eleven, then headed to Julie’s.
There were even more presents at Julie’s house, plus all the relations you could shake a stick at (don’t worry, we didn’t). There was food and drink and sun and then swimming in the pool between courses. What can I say, my first Australian Christmas!!!
I forgot to take my phone this a’vo but thought you might like a picture which sums up Joshua’s day, as it shows his Octopod, Lego, beach towel and bathers plus his new school bag, as well as the beanbag that Janice bought him, which he also loves.
It’s been a good day, but I have missed you all.
Lots of love
Dan

Young ‘N’ Old

Dear Mum,
Our trip to the Swan Valley yesterday was really good. We left after lunch, Bob drove, Josh slept most of the way.
The first place we stopped was Bells Rapids, a small river which apparently grows large enough for a famous kayaking competition to take place there. Joshua thought it was brilliant and didn’t want to leave.
However we had to, as we all needed a drink and a bite to eat. There are chocolate shops, nougat shops and cheese shops, along with wineries galore. We didn’t get to any wine sellers but had some nice sweeties and drinks.
Today we went to Penny’s party in the morning. Deanne and I chatted to Emma, Clayton, Kathy and Michelle while Josh played with Penny, Alice and Ella, oh yes and Danielle was there too, although her Mum didn’t stay. A good time was had by all and the boy seemed to be trying to eat all the food Emma had made.
After that we went to Deanne’s Great Aunt Chrissie’s party. A bit more subdued than Penny’s party, but not really surprising with an 85 year difference in birthday ages! We talked to Janice, Kody, Helen, Rick and a whole bunch of Dee’s slightly more distant relations. Julie is on holiday with some mates at the minute so she wasn’t there.
Back to the grind tomorrow. I’ve dropped a few pictures in ToF’s Dropbox, so get him to move them and get rid of them when he’s done.
Thought you’d appreciate the photo I took at one of the shops yesterday!

Here We Go Again

Dear Mum,
I start my new job tomorrow so been a bit busy getting ready.
Visited Bob today, as we had to go in his direction to get some bedclothes. Last night Josh stayed at Julie’s because we went out to our friend Jodi’s 40th birthday party. All the best people turn 40 this year!!!
We also went to Garden City yesterday, there was a dinosaur thing on, as you can see.
With the new job I’m guessing we won’t speak until next weekend, but if I get a chance I’ll write about what’s going on.

Look, Anomalocaris!

Dear Mum,
This morning was mainly spent retrieving boxes from the garage then putting things into them. Then getting more boxes. Hopefully the early start on the packing means everything will be good and ready by the time we leave.
Bob popped over at about lunchtime so we chatted to him while we ate our toasted sandwiches.
In the afternoon we went to Fremantle and had an ice cream, then wandered around for an hour or so before stopping for a drink and some wedges. As you can see Joshua enjoyed the wedges.
We got home at about five and the master finally allowed me to put on the First Life DVD, which we borrowed from Bob about five months ago. He wasn’t too impressed by the first episode, about the first organisms on the planet, which didn’t move our do anything very exciting really. But when the second one came on he brightened up a bit and started to tell us what the animals were. Hence the “look, anomalocaris” title of this message.
He had a quick nap in the car on the way home but was tired, so he went in the deep bath after Deanne had used it to soothe her back a bit then to bed quite early. We then watched Dr Who, another good ‘un I thought, and are now in bed at 8:49 because it’s been such a tiring day.
Monday again tomorrow so more of Rich’s work, although we’re signing the papers for the new house at 4 o’clock.

The Long Dark Tea Time Of The Joshua

Dear Mum,

Deanne dropped Josh off today so I went straight to work. I didn’t feel like I accomplished very much but, in fact, I seemed to do quite a lot. Just not much that I actually finished. I think that is the difference between a great day and an average day at work, you actually finish a lot of things off.

Joshua got picked up by Bob, then had a small adventure. They arrived at our house and got out the car, then Pops realised he didn’t have our house keys. So the two of them spent some time in the front garden doing some weeding until Dee arrived home, to let them in. I think they both had a good time!

Deanne made a roast for tea, which was really very tasty. Joshy took an age to eat his tea so he forewent his bath and we just brushed his teeth then gave him Tabby McTat as a story and straight to sleep (the picture is of him getting ready). I’m at work again tomorrow and Deanne has the day off to look after the boy, not sure what they are doing but hopefully nothing that’ll put any strain on Deanne’s back. She is feeling a bit better now but the physio’ said it’ll be a while before she’s capable of any heavy lifting.

Talking of which we put the application in for the house in Leeing today so keep your fingers crossed for us.

Doctors

Dear Mum,

I stayed and played until the start of class this morning. It was Joshua’s turn to ring the bell this morning so it was good to see him getting to have a go, and enjoying it.

I didn’t really do much this morning, I’m a bit unwell with a cold and have been doing a lot of stuff recently, including today!

Bob turned up unannounced at about midday, he was going to come over before picking Joshua up and do some gardening, which we really appreciate, however something had come up at work for tomorrow so he had some stuff to do at home this afternoon. He tried texting me but couldn’t get his text to send, so he drove over to see if I was in, so he could tell me he couldn’t come round to do the gardening before picking Joshua up!!! I just nodded and smiled, then showed him what he was doing wrong on his phone. In any case he actually did go out into the garden with Joshy after school and pulled up a load of weeds anyway.

I went to see another recruitment consultant this afternoon, which was actually quite interesting. I told him all about my interesting and varied career, using the word “interesting” about every other sentence for some reason. He’s waiting to hear back from a company about a couple of suitable roles but I told him I had been offered a role anyway (the one which I start on Friday), and he gave me some advice about that, which was nice.

After getting home Josh and I accompanied Deanne to the physiotherapist, she had her appointment and now has some exercises to do, which have already helped her back quite a lot after being in quite a lot of pain, whenever she moved for most of today. After the appointment it was getting a bit late to make tea so we got chips and potato fritters.

Tomorrow Deanne is dropping Joshua off so I might go for a run, which I haven’t done for ages. I’ll also get on with some of Rich’s work. I’ve also been in contact with a guy from a band who want a singer, their guitarist is away for a month or so but when he’s back they are going to have some try-outs, so that’s quite exciting too.

Joshua Playing In The Garden

Joshua Playing In The Garden

House Party

Dear Mum,
Very tired after our visit from Bob this morning, then Alice’s party in the afternoon. Joshua played and ate, but mostly ate. Dee and I talked to Emma, Michelle and Kathy who are Penny, Ella and Alice’s Mums.
Deanne and I watched a film this evening and now it’s time for bed.
Found our first redback in the garden this morning, thought you might like a picture?!?!

Fairies

Dear Mum,
This morning we got ready early, for a Sunday, and headed to Hoyt’s which is one of the cinema chains over here. Deanne had four tickets to see Tinkerbell and the Pirates, or some such, so we asked Emma if Penny would like to come with us. She said that Lillian (with two Ls) would like to see it too, so the three of them would come.
Penny and Josh ran to get seats first, followed by Dee, me, Lillian then Emma. The film was okay, if you like fairys, but the kids seemed to enjoy it. Probably the best bit was when the pirates appeared and Penny turned to Josh and said “if you get scared of the pirates you can hold my hand.” Aw!
When we got home afterwards Bob came over to get his mower, which he forgot to take last time he came over to get his mower!
Other than those things we didn’t do much more today. Obviously tomorrow is a big day for me, but I’ll let you know how the new job goes when I have a clue myself. I’m heading to work (sounds weird to say that) after dropping the boy off at kindy. Bob is picking him up in the afternoon, then bringing him home. Deanne will get back about half an hour afterwards, hopefully Josh will behave for Bob, and vice versa.
I took the picture while making lunch, not entirely certain what he was doing but he seemed to be enjoying himself.

Sunken Ships

Dear Mum,

Deanne popped out to Target this morning while Josh and I were getting ready. Joshua spent some time playing on the tablet because we were going out in the afternoon.

Bob arrived at about quarter past twelve, while we were just finishing off our little pizzas (bought bases with cheese and tomato sauce, then ham for Josh and sundried tomatoes for Deanne and I). After finishing off the cake she was making we jumped in our car and drove to Fremantle.

We found a parking space nearby then walked to the Shipwreck Museum. It was very good, with a small part of a recovered boat called the Batavia, which was a Dutch East India Company (VOC) ship which sank in 1629 about 400 KM north of Perth. I can’t remember if we took you there when you came over but if not we might have to go next time, as it’ll remind you a bit of the Mary Rose.

After leaving the museum we went to the café on the waterfront, the one with the big fish tanks in it. Joshua was melting down a bit as we got there, I think he needed something to eat but he recovered after having a babychino (warm milk and chocolate), half a chocolate éclair (I got the other half) and a stern word from his Mummy about his behaviour.

He watched Madagascar (the cartoon) when we got home and Deanne and I did some housework and then she made a roast and slice for tea.

No particular plans for tomorrow yet.

Mow, Mow, Mow Your Lawn

Dear Mum,
A quiet start to the day as Josh was at Nana’s house. Deanne was a little late setting off to work and when she’d gone I showered then hung out some washing.
I started dong some work but stopped when Bob turned up around ten. He left his lawn mower today, as the grass was too wet to cut when he was here. We had a bit of a look round the garden to see if anything else needed doing, then he had a cup of coffee, as we had no tea bags ’cause Deanne had taken the box to work.
After he went I got on with downloading Science from the interweb. I’ve almost finished the spreadsheet Rich gave me now, just a couple of hundred to go, plus some checking. I’ll need to Skype him at some point to check what needs doing next.
I made a cheesy potato bake for tea but forgot to parboil the potatoes, so it wasn’t cooked until half six. After we’d eaten I put Joshy to bed. The picture is a relatively standard bedtime story scene in Josh’s room.
Tomorrow is a daycare day. Hopefully I can get another hundred or two papers done.
Love
Dan
