Afternoon Nap

Dear Mum,
This morning Dee and I were doing housework and paperwork, during which time Josh did some cutting and drawing, as per the photo.
Deanne made some fruity-grainy slicey things, then after lunch I packed some snacks and drinks and we went to the park, taking Josh’s bike.
Sadly Joshua got a bit grumpy so we didn’t spend a lot of time there. When we got back he put himself to bed and slept for about two and a half hours, so apparently he was tired.
I made baked potatoes and salad for tea, then Josh had jelly and ice cream for pudding.
Tomorrow is kindy for the boy, I’ll be doing some of Rich’s work, as well as a few other bits and pieces. Dee will be at work, obviously.

Brave Little Soldier

Dear Mum,

Took Josh to the doctors this morning for his final two jabs, he was really brave but the second one brought a few tears to his eyes. He took a little while to recover but after the nurse gave him a Milky Way and he’d played in the twisty office chair for a while as I was answering questions about his health and general well being he finally felt well enough to eat the chocolate bar.

In the afternoon we took his bike to the park and he rode a few kilometers. I also took along a wrench and we tried his stabilisers at different heights and also tried removing them completely. He couldn’t quite balance on himself but he finished with them raised as high as they could go so I think he’ll be there before too long.

We stopped off at the bike ramps on the way home as he wanted to try going on them, initially on his bike with my help, then just running up and sliding down on his bum. He loved it.

As you know Deanne got home early as she really wasn’t feeling very well, partly the bad back and partly, I think, the stress of everything that’s going on at the moment. Hopefully the next visit to the physio on Saturday will help.

Gotta go to bed as I need to be up early in the morning to drop Josh off and get to work.

He’s Out

Dear Mum,
To say we didn’t have much planned today if turned out quite busy.
After getting ready this morning we went to the library, to drop off Deanne and Josh’s books, and so Joshua could get some more. He picked two dinosaur books and one about ancient amphibians!
We went to the shops on the way back to get some presents for the twins’ birthdays on Wednesday. Bob met us there and then came home with us, where we had drinks and some biscuits. Dee had made them beforehand and frozen the mixture so just took the block of dough out, cut it into slices and baked it. Lovely.
Toasted cheese sarnies for lunch then we went to the local shops, Dee and I walked and Josh took his bike as it’s not that local. When we got home we let Snugs go out into the back garden. He was a little nervous and we bought him back in pretty quickly, but I think it won’t take him too long to get the hang of it. He did have another quick sojourn after tea but seems a little agoraphobic and came back pretty quickly.
Tea was risotto and garlic bread. This evening I’m going to read my amazing proof copy of The Long Mars.
Don’t know what we’re doing tomorrow yet. Might Skype you if we’re home in the afternoon.

Soup

Dear Mum,

We had a nice relaxing day today. The morning was spent playing with Play Dough, making cubby houses with blankets, the sofa and the glass table and putting on some washing, etc.

Bob arrived  at our’s at lunch time, I’d made some bread in the bread machine and we defrosted, mixed and warmed up a couple of soups we had in the freezer that we’d made a week or two ago. It was very nice.

After lunch I helped Bob sort out a couple of things on his laptop, which he’d brought over with him, first of all was having a quick look at his wireless, which was giving him gyp, then I showed him how to digitise his CDs, I did one for him and walked him through another, so he would remember. He was going to listen to the MP3s on a pen drive on the way home.

After Pops left we headed to the park with Joshy’s bike, our neighbour saw when we noticed the tyres were flat and lent us a pump. The tyres have obviously been that way for a bit because as we were going round the lake Josh was cycling almost faster than I could run after him. We’re going to have to pick Deanne’s bike up from Julie’s house so we don’t lose him.

I took the picture this afternoon while Joshua was playing with his net toy bag thing, putting his toys, and himself into it and then pouring himself out again.

We’re having lunch at Julie’s tomorrow, apart from that no real plans, may go to the zoo if we have a chance but depends on how long lunch takes us.

Push Me Daddy

Dear Mum,

This morning Deanne went out to a craft fair in Perth so Joshua and I had some Daddy/Joshy time. We got dressed, played with his Play Dough, did some stickering, then we went to the park and Joshua cycled a circuit which took in a large portion of this side of Bibra Lake. He goes fast enough for me not to be able to keep up with him now, but when there is an incline he keeps asking for a push to get him going again. When he gets far enough away from me he stops, turns round and shouts “take a picture Daddy”. So I have about ten pictures of a tiny dot in the middle distance.

After lunch Deanne and Joshua made some bran flake cakes and then, because we’ve had such a busy week with a few late nights for Joshua we spent most of the afternoon letting him watch TV shows. However, due to the fact that the power block for our TV box has blown he had to watch them on the laptop rather than the TV. This meant I had to teach him how to navigate the ABC4Kids website, start the videos and make them fill the screen. He learnt worryingly quickly! He’ll be better than us in a year or twos time I suspect.

So tomorrow I’ll be heading to Subiaco, where the iiNet shop is, and swapping our power block for a new one. I also need to pop to the bank to pay some money in and probably do some other stuff I’ve forgotten about. It doesn’t seem like it should be Monday again already!

The picture is of the pile of Teddies Joshua left by the front door. When I asked him what they were for he said that he was going to take them to Nana’s house when it’s Joshy/Nana day this week.

Bingo, I Mean House, I Mean…Oh, Whatever!!!

Dear Mum,

A BIG day today! Joshua and I got dressed and headed out towards Deanne’s old school on his bike. He is so confident now, as you can see by the nonchalant way he’s not looking where he’s going, although still a bit lazy and asking me to push him more often than is strictly necessary. We got to the school and he rode around a bit, then parked his bike and played on the playground, pretending to be animals – giraffes, lions, tigers, monkeys, etc. We stopped for a snack and a drink and played a bit more, then he cycled home again.

After lunch we packed ourselves up and headed for the hospital at Fremantle for my diabetes appointment. I was a little worried Joshua would get bored and be naughty but he sat and ate a packet of biscuits while we were waiting, introduced himself beautifully to the nurse who weighed and measured me. Something he has only really picked up in the last couple of weeks, before that he mostly ignored people who spoke to him.

When we went in to see the doctor (I felt very old because she must have been ten or fifteen years younger than me and a consulting endocrinologist) I gave Joshua his Dinosaur Search And Find book and he sat quietly in the chair next to me, looking for and counting the animals.

My actual appointment was fine and my control seems to be pretty good, especially considering I’ve recently emigrated. HbA1c of 7.0 mmol/l and an unusually handy 5.9 when I did a blood test for the nurse. I have to go see them again in six months time, but that’s just standard procedure, and at least I now have all my NDSS stuff signed off so I can get cheap(er) insulin pump consumables.

After we got home I got a phone call from the estate agents, who said that we’ve got the house we put an application in for. I was extremely surprised and called Deanne immediately to tell her the good news. I don’t think either of us can really believe it but it appears to be true. We get the keys on the 24th, I’ll let you know the address in an email sometime soon. Now we just have to sort out getting our stuff delivered there at a similar time.

I picked Deanne up from work at five, as she had somehow ripped the knee on her trousers and didn’t want to have to come home on public transport. This evening she has been out at a cosmetics party, so I’ve been writing thank you notes for Joshua’s birthday party guests and looking up internet providers, etc. for the move.

Tomorrow is Joshua/Nana day so I’m going to get my job application emailed off and look up other house type things we might need.

Open Wide and Say Aaagh!

Dear Mum,

I went to the dentist today, and while I realise that in the UK it was only “free” because we paid a decent percentage of our wage into a National Insurance scheme, it was still a bit jarring to be charged $155 for a look in my mouth and a couple of X-Rays. On the bright side it’s just a small infection (my suspicion would be brought on by the changes in air pressure on the flight over, I’ve heard it can do that), I got some antibiotics (prescription – about $18, felt very odd for a Diabetic!), and have started taking them. The only bad news being that if the drugs don’t knock it on the head I’ll probably need a root canal 😦

We took Joshua to his Day Care to have a look around as well. Even though it’s the school summer holidays there is still day care for kids with working parents, etc. So it was quite busy there and we met a few of the other kids, some of which may be attending with him, although we didn’t find that out.

Also, because it is finally “Wednesday” he had a go on his bike. We took him round the corner to Oberthur primary school, mainly because it was close and had a lot of shaded bits of path. He wasn’t too sure about the whole thing when we started but by the time we got back to Julie’s all I was doing was helping him steer so he didn’t ride into the road.

We were going to do some other fun stuff with him today but he had a bit of a breakdown around lunch time and most of the rest of the day was a bit of a write off. He was so bad that, for about the third or fourth time in his life, I didn’t read him a bed time story 😦

Still don’t have the laptop, but as soon as we get it we’ll start putting our pictures on it and get a bit more active with sending you some of them.

Love

Dan
