License To…Drive

Dear Mum,

We set off early to get to the Centrelink office this morning, however not early enough. We arrived at half eight but it opened at eight so we had to wait in a long queue, then sit in chairs waiting for an hour and a half until we were called, then it only took five minutes to register our details. On the bright side while we were waiting Deanne managed to set up our private health insurance 🙂

After that we went to buy a SIM card for my mobile phone so I can actually call and text people…as well as being able to check my facebook and twitter accounts!

Joshua cried as we left him with Nana, but apparently it only lasted five minutes after we’d left. Suspect we’ll get more tears on Monday for the first day of Kindy.

This afternoon we swam for a while, it was pretty hot so the cool pool was nice. After swimming I headed over to the DVS to get my driving license sorted, as my Tax File Number arrived while we were out and that was the last thing I needed. However, as with all these things the lady sorted everything out then told me that I need to get a form signed by my doctor to say I’m well controlled, so that’ll be another trip to the doctor.

In the morning we’re off to collect the last few things from Joshua’s school shop, then looking at a house, then popping to the doctors which is nearby to see about getting my driving application sent off.

Haircut 100 (dollars)!!!

Dear Mum,

Only joking, it actually cost $42 to get mine and Joshua’s hair cut today, although it was worth it, we both look great!

He and I went out first thing this morning, but went to Woolworths first to buy him a new toothbrush and toothpaste, then we went and looked but it was before nine so the hairdresser was still closed so we headed to Target and had a look at the videos and toys, he is most impressed at the enormous volume of Dinosaur Train DVDs over here, as well as Movies which we have on the recorder currently shipping over from the UK, so won’t be buying.

After getting home again Deanne, Josh and I went to his school and Joshua showed Dee around, we let him walk the way he wanted to as we’re trying to let him get used to it before he starts there on Monday. He seems much happier about the idea of going than he did at first, which is nice.

The we went to see a little Bob The Builder show which was running for the summer holidays up the road, it consisted of a woman dancing with someone dressed up as Bob in one of those big suits, which I don’t envy in this weather. It lasted for half and hour, and although he didn’t join the other kids dancing he stared entranced (or possibly scared) the whole time.

He actually had another nap this afternoon, he keeps saying I’m not tired in a grumpy voice, then goes down and sleeps for about two hours until we have to wake him up so he’ll actually go to bed.

Tomorrow morning Julie is looking after him and we’re going to Centrelink, which is a bit like a benefits office. Bob has mentioned it’s where all the lowest denominations of society hang out, so we’re looking forward to that. But we have to get Joshy a CRN number before we can get any sort of idea about what the Day Care place is going to charge to look after him.

Oh yes, i also found out today that I can’t get my NDSS stuff signed off because I have an insulin pump which was prescribed in another country. So I have to see an endocrinologist to get a rubber stamp on some paperwork before I can get subsidised consumables, like infusion sets and blood test sticks. Ridiculous!!!

No Sleep ‘Till Bedtime

Dear Mum,

Finally Joshua is getting in to a proper routine, e.g. waking up at around seven-ish and actually eating full meals, as opposed to quitting half way through!

Deanne drove to her work this morning to see how that compared to public transport, wasn’t far different apparently, think she will take bus/train/ferry most of the time but have the car if she needs it. I spent the morning playing with Joshua until she got back, then we had to go to the doctors.

It was an appointment for Joshua to get an immunisation, he wasn’t very happy from the moment we were called in by the doctor, then he started screeching and wouldn’t stop. It was not much fun. However about ten minutes afterwards he calmed down and had the Freddo Frog chocolate the nurse had given him and just blubbed a little for the rest of the journey. He’s okay now!

This a’vo we went and bought a car seat for him, the shop looked a bit dodgy but we got a pretty good one for under a hundred dollars, which is pretty good. We’ve swapped our old one into Julie’s car and have put the new one in ours, it is red and black so matches the car nicely 🙂

Tomorrow is free so far, which means we’ll likely be jam packed busy.

Tour De Bull Creek

Dear Mum,

We had another quiet-ish day, mainly due to the bank holiday. This morning Deanne made a little picnic for snack time and we went out so Joshua could take his bike out for another ride, we went to the school again where he was riding it the other day. This time we stopped and Josh played on the playground at the school, climbing frames, slides, monkey bars, not like the school playgrounds in the UK!

We were quite impressed because he managed to ride pretty much the whole way back to Julie’s without a lot of intervention from us, obviously we helped him across the roads and over a few “tricky bits” as he calls them, but in the space of about four go’s he has learnt how to pedal and steer all by himself.

This afternoon we went to try and buy a car seat, but the shop we went to didn’t have a lot in the way of stock, even though it had said on their website that they did. Mainly we’re getting one so we don’t have to mess about swapping our one between our car and Julie’s when she is picking him up from Day Care (what they call nursery) or looking after him.

He had a nap this afternoon and Deanne made a fantastic risotto for tea.

I might try Skypeing Rich in the morning, see if I can catch you before you head back to Blighty.

Happy Australia Day

Dear Mum,

Today was Australia Day! We started out by arriving at Bull Creek Park a little too late this morning, just as all the festivities were being packed away, however Joshua got to look at the ducks in the pond and follow a little man-made stream to see where it started.

Julie and Rick are still away, getting back tomorrow so it’s quiet at home just now, we had sandwiches for lunch, just cheese for Josh, halloumi and sun-dried tomato for Deanne and I. This afternoon Joshua and Deanne both had a nap 🙂 So I did a bit of housework and started making a picnic tea, once they were up and sorted we headed out towards the river, there were fireworks so we had our food and then went down to a little beach where Joshy danced to the music which they play on one of the radio stations to accompany the fireworks, he had a great time.

Back home and he was a little reluctant to have his shower/hairwash but eventually calmed down and then had chapter six of Pooh (again), he loves that book, this is the second time through it.

Bank holiday tomorrow, not sure what we’re doing yet.

Bingo…Or House…Or Whatever You Say!

Dear Mum,

As Deanne and i found ourselves at a kind of a loose end today, what with Joshua being in the caravan at Coogee with Rick and Julie, we decided to go sort out Deanne’s phone. She’s still using her UK one, which was not playing with the Australian SIM card the Vodafone shop had sold her. However finally, after a factory reset to put all the settings back to their defaults, we took it in, a nice young man updated the details for the Aussie network and it finally seems to work. I’ll let you know the number when you get back to England so you can put it in your phone book.

After that we went to look at some houses in Leeming, they weren’t in the right part of Leeming but we thought we should start getting our eyes in for what to look out for. A couple were not good (in the words of Abney and Teal), one looked very good, although that was because it was about $200,000 over our probable budget. The last one we looked at was maybe a bit tired but actually quite a promising prospect, not far off what we’re wanting to pay and the configuration of the rooms was close to what we’re after.

However none of this really helps us at the moment as we can’t really get something until our stuff is due to turn up in a couple more months, but it was interesting to take a look anyway.

Later in the afternoon we headed to the caravan park to meet up with the happy campers, we had a barbie, then went down to the beach to watch the sunset, Joshua had a great time running up and down on the beach but by the time we went back to the caravan to say good night he was too tired and wouldn’t stay another night so insisted on coming home with us (there were tears). Got back, gave him a bath then put him to bed. He was knackered.

Off Out

Dear Mum,

Can’t write much as we’re off to a restaurant in Scarborough.

Last we saw of Joshua he was giving us a big wave and a smile from the back of the enormo-mobile as they drove off to the caravan park they are staying in tonight. We’ll head in that direction tomorrow a’vo and see if he want’s to stay another night :-S

Deanne has just finished showering so I better get my shoes on.
